Mrs. Polly Ann Shoulders Carter , age 90 of Gallatin, TN, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Carter will be conducted on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 10:00 AM from Woodard Funeral Home with Bro. Glenn Creasy officiating. Interment will follow in Bethpage Upper Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Woodard Funeral Home.
Polly Shoulders Carter – born in Red Boiling Springs, TN on July 22, 1928 to Edith M. and Leamon Shoulders. In 1933 the family moved to Gallatin, TN where Polly began elementary school. The family lived in Gallatin until 1944 when they moved to Nashville and Polly began attending Isaac Litton High School in Inglewood. She graduated from Isaac Litton in 1946. While at Isaac Litton she was a majorette something in which she took great pride. After graduating from Litton she went on to attend David Lipscomb College from 1946 to 1948. In June of 1948, Polly met George Weston Carter, Jr. and they married on October 9, 1948 and moved to George’s hometown, Westmoreland, TN. While living in Westmoreland, Polly and George had two children, Polly Ann, born July 14, 1949 and Nancy Gay, born July 19, 1950. Polly was a substitute teacher at Westmoreland Elementary until a few years later she and George moved their family to Nashville, TN where they had their third child, George Weston Carter, III born on August 10, 1955. They re-established roots in Westmoreland in 1956 where they continued to raise their family. On April 7, 1966 they had their fourth child, Mary Emily. Polly and George served the Westmoreland community in several capacities. They opened several businesses in Westmoreland namely Carter Hardware. As committed members of First Baptist Church, Polly and George filled the roles of church secretary and deacon, respectively. They also felt it was important to instill in their children this same sense of community service. George also served as a city councilman as well as mayor of Westmoreland while Polly served as the City Recorder where she hand wrote all water bills for the City of Westmoreland. George passed away on April 30, 1977 and Polly continued to operate Carter Hardware until she sold the store and went to work part-time for Citizens Bank. In 1996 Polly moved back to Gallatin and lived there until 1999 when she moved to Hendersonville, TN where she lived until 2016. Polly is preceded in death by her husband George Weston Carter, Jr. and her parents Edith M. and Leamon Shoulders as well as her siblings, Harris M. Shoulders and Katherine Shoulders Dunklin. She is survived by one sibling Delano Shoulders Brent of Madison, TN. Polly is also survived by her children, Polly Ann Shinton of Gallatin, TN, Nancy Carter Kennedy (Mike) of Hendersonville, TN, George W. Carter, III (Cyndy) of Westmoreland, TN and Emily Carter Short (Cedric) of Hendersonville, TN. Other surviving family members include her grandchildren, Charles Weston Shinton (Chris), Amanda Kennedy Parker (Scott), Kelly Shinton Callaghan (Tommy), Lesley Michael Kennedy (Dale), Kacey Carter Shinton, George Weston Carter, IV (Cara), Courtney Carter Paschall (Kevin), Spencer Brodioi Carter, Michaela Elayne Short and Matthew Evan Short. Surviving great-grandchildren are Elizabeth Ann Clayton (Chaz), Laura Ashley Brown (Lloyd), George Weston Carter, V, Sarah Faye Shinton, Gavin Tyler Callaghan, Monte Ayers Carter, Darla Macey Shinton, Marlee Lucille Carter, Paxton Scott Parker, Cade Michael Parker and Henry Carter Paschall and one great-great grandchild Aiden Michael Brown. Polly is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Family members will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are close friends of the family.
